Commissioning and Appointing

As indicated previously, there are three steps in the process of Commissioning a Cadet as a Salvation Army Officer.

The first step took place last Thursday with the signing of the Officers Covenant.

The next two steps follow and take place today, these being Commissioning/Ordination and Appointing.

Commissioning & Ordination.

At Commissioning, a Cadet is given a written commission acknowledging their satisfactory completion of the required training. The Commission invests within them the authority to act on behalf of The Salvation Army as an Officer and as such, they are subject to the governance of the movement as outlined in Orders and Regulations. At that time, the rank of Lieutenant is conferred upon the Cadet.

Odination is the recognition of spiritual authority required in executing their role as a minister of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, and that their every effort must be invested in seeking the salvation of the world.

Appointing

Every Commissioned Officer is given an assignment or as we know it, an appointment. The Officer is required, during that service, to step forward in act of faith and receive the appointment that has been decided for them. This is the first of many appointments they might receive throughout their officership. An Officer is expected to receive their appointment as from God and, in the spirit of true discipleship, to go to the place where they are being asked to serve.

At Commissioning, an Officers will relinquish title to the discipline of the Church so far as appointments are concerned.

I honour those who step forward today and surrender their life to the purposes of God.
